Easy Apple Crisp
....And now it's apple season.🍎 Summer is so fun! One by one, each fruit and vegetable comes into season, and it's time to make all the traditional recipes.
Also, it's so fun shopping for apples when the apples are in season. There are so many different kinds! Ask ten people which apple is the best, and you'll possibly get ten different answers.😅
Anyway, I had a few apples here that were starting to turn wrinkly, so naturally, I made an easy, old fashioned apple crisp.
We don't make desserts very often, but when I do decide to make one, it's usually an easy recipe:) Apple crisp is very easy to make! And it's great for beginners - Little-Miss-two-year-old loved helping with this one!
And above all, apple crisp is delicious! Especially when served warm, ideally with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. Yum!
Supplies You'll Need (and what we used)
- A baking dish - an 8x8 square or something similar in size. I'm actually using a pie pan today!
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Cutting board & kitchen knife - to chop the apples
- Peeler - if you wish to peel the apples
- Large mixing bowl - for mixing:)
- Kitchenaid hand mixer - this works great to quickly mix the crumb topping, though you can also use a fork
All About the Ingredients

- Apples - the star of the show! You want to make sure you get apples that are more firm, so they don't get mushy in the oven. Golden Delicious, Pink Lady, Granny Smith, Honeycrisp... are some good options. I used Gala this time, because that's what we have on hand:)
- Sugar - I like to use cane sugar
- Flour - I'll be using fresh milled whole wheat flour, like usual:)
- Cinnamon - gives the apple crisp a lovely flavor
- Brown sugar - you can also get brown cane sugar, though this time I'm using regular brown sugar
- Oats - rolled oats, and I like to get the organic ones
- Butter - salted butter. If using unsalted butter, add a pinch of salt to the mixture!
- Baking soda - this is optional, but it helps improve the flavor, texture and browning of the crumb topping.

How to make Easy Old Fashioned Apple Crisp
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
Wash and chop the apples (and peel them if you wish!).

Toss the apples with the sugar, flour and cinnamon.
Then layer them evenly in the bottom of a greased 8" baking dish.

Mix the softened butter, flour, oats, brown sugar and baking soda together in the mixing bowl. (the mixture may be lumpy) I used my Kitchenaid hand mixer to quickly mix this together.
Spread the crumb topping evenly on top of the apple layer. Bake for 30 minutes or until the apples are soft. You can poke the apples with a fork to check if they're soft.

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!🍎

How to Store Leftover Apple Crisp
Cover the leftover apple crisp or place in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
Which Apples are Best for Making Apple Crisp?
Some of the best apples for making apple crisp are Golden Delicious, Pink Lady, Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Jonagold, Cortland... the list could go on.
Some people prefer mixing sweet and tart apples (like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp) for better flavor. Though you can do all sweet or all tart.
And I'm over here making another apple crisp with all Gala apples (and we think it's delicious!) so anyway. Do what you will with that info.😅
