Welcome to…

Hey, there!
We’re Randall and Julie, and we’re so glad you’re here! We’re a twenty-something couple from the Midwest with a shared passion and love for all things food! Our ideal weekend is spending a bunch of time in the kitchen; whipping up timeless, classic Mennonite recipes. If you want to be the first to know what we’re up to, we’d love to have you join our email list!
Our Mission here at Small Town Scratch
Share delicious recipes that have been handed down for generations, and simple homemaking traditions of our rich Mennonite heritage and culture. Homemaking doesn’t have to be hard!
A little more about us
We are a Christian couple, both born and raised in the Mennonite culture.
We both come from generations of good cooks, and we’ve inherited (or maybe acquired, in my case) a passion for food. That being said, we knew next to nothing about actually growing food and making meals when we got married. That was always Mom’s job.
We were married in March of 2020 (in the midst of the pandemic), when everything was closed.
Since then we’ve learned a ton about homemaking, and we realized we wanted to share our unique journey and experiences with anyone and everyone! And that is how Small Town Scratch came to be. Because cooking and homemaking doesn’t have to be hard, and we want to inspire and encourage everyone to give it a try!
Our Homestead
My husband and I currently live on a 30 acre property in the Midwest with our sweet baby daughter. Our property is surrounded by my husband’s parents and brothers and their families.
We enjoy growing all sorts of things in our garden, to use in our cooking and to can or freeze for the long winters. If there’s something we don’t have growing on our homestead yet, like peaches, for instance, we can usually get it at our local bulk food store.
Sewing some of our own clothes, or perhaps a curtain or pillow cover is another tradition of our culture.
Today, you can find us working hard at creating our own little homestead in the country. We would be delighted to have you follow along as we share about our unique journey through life on our platform, Small Town Scratch.
