This easy recipe contains a perfect combination of pretzels, Rice Chex, Cheerios, and M&M’s coated with a delicious white chocolate drizzle resulting in a sweet and salty White Trash Snack Mix perfect for a pink birthday party, baby shower, or Valentine’s Day!

Pair this snack mix with a hot drink such as hot chocolate for a wonderful snack on a cold day. Or, pair with an ice cold punch like this one on a hot day in summer. The options are endless so go ahead, use your imagination and indulge in a dish of white trash snack mix in any season.
You’ve probably seen recipes for Christmas crack, muddy buddies, puppy chow, party mix, etc. during the holiday season (and all year), but this recipe is a little different. It’s a fairly classic snack mix made with 5 common ingredients, and it contains no nuts or peanut butter like some.

It just so happens to be that time of the year; several aisles of pink miraculously show up at the front of the grocery stores.
The local newspaper features long-time sweethearts, and the flower shops run large enticing ads hoping to attract the attention of all the male population out there.
And who knew that an external temperature of 35 degrees Fahrenheit could feel like a welcome warm spell? The heaps of snow start to disappear and I hear the trickling of melted snow in the downspout.
Alas, it is the season of Valentine’s.
So let’s capitalize on today and whip up a delicious treat – white trash snack mix (pink Valentine’s Day version, of course) for all the special folks in our lives!

Why is it called White Trash Snack Mix?
Good question.
After mixing all the simple ingredients together, and tossing with melted white chocolate, the appearance of the snack mix somewhat resembles trash. White trash, that is.

Ingredients

Cheerios cereal: the pink Very Berry flavored kind, specifically.
Pretzels: we used the sticks, but obviously you can use mini pretzels or whatever you prefer.
Rice Squares cereal: or corn chex, or a mixture of cereals. We like Rice Chex the best.
M&M’s: A pink colored Valentine’s Day edition of the regular good old M&M’s.
White chocolate chips: we used the Hershey’s cream cheese flavored ones.
Supplies you may need
- Large mixing bowl
- Sheet pan lined with parchment paper or wax paper
- Double boiler or small saucepan and a glass heat safe bowl
- Silicone whisk and spatula
How to make White Trash Snack Mix
First get out a large mixing bowl and dump in the Cheerios, pretzels, rice squares and M&M’s.

Next prepare a makeshift double boiler by boiling about a cup of water in a small saucepan and setting a larger heat safe glass bowl on top.

Keep the water boiling on medium heat and put your chocolate chips in the glass bowl on top. Look out for steam puffing out from the saucepan! For more info on how to do this successfully, click here.
Stir with a whisk until all the chocolate chips are melted and you’ve got smooth, creamy white chocolate. This may take up to 10 minutes, so don’t panic if it doesn’t start to melt immediately.

The glass dish may be hot, so carefully remove from the glass dish and pour the melted chocolate on top of the dry ingredients in the mixing bowl.
Use a silicone or rubber spatula and toss to coat everything in white chocolate.

Line a sheet pan with parchment or wax paper, and spread the white trash snack mix out evenly to cool.

After the chocolate has cooled and hardened, about 30 minutes, break into chunks and enjoy!

Notes
Store in an airtight container or bag for 1-2 weeks.
Fun fact – you can freeze this snack mix as well! It’s good straight from the freezer, or thawed.
This recipe is very customizable, obviously. For instance, you could use a combination of chex cereal, or a different type of M&M, such as peanut M&M’s.
Be aware, if you decide to melt the white chocolate chips in the microwave, don’t heat for more than 20 seconds at a time. Overheating can cause the chocolate to turn clumpy.
One alternative to white chocolate chips is almond bark or melting chips specifically for melting. These will be easier to melt than white chocolate chips, but may slightly change the flavor. Read more on melting white chocolate here.
For a more chocolate-y snack mix, use 2 bags of vanilla chips instead of just one!
