Chocolate Pudding Frosting is the most creamy, fluffy, and chocolate-y frosting; it’s super easy and quick to make and perfect for swirling on chocolate cupcakes or layering on top of a chocolate cake.

Chocolate Pudding Frosting Ingredients
Whipped topping – we use Cool Whip most times since it’s so easy and convenient. It doesn’t need to be at room temperature, but make sure it’s thawed (or it won’t mix nicely!). You can totally make your own whipped cream topping by beating some heavy whipping cream until stiff peaks form and adding a little bit of sugar.
Instant pudding – chocolate flavored instant dry pudding mix
Vanilla extract
That’s it! Only three simple ingredients you may already have in the house.

Supplies you’ll want to grab
- Mixing bowl – a medium bowl for mixing; we use this one for mixing quite often in our kitchen!
- Electric handheld mixer – a super easy way to mix up this chocolate frosting is to use an electric handheld mixer. You can also use a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, or do it by hand.
- Measuring cups and spoons – to measure those ingredients
- Spatula – it’s always a good idea to have a spatula for scraping down the sides of the mixing bowl, etc.
How to make the Super Easy Chocolate Pudding Frosting Recipe
Place all three ingredients in a mixing bowl and whip with a handheld mixer (or by hand) until all the instant pudding is incorporated.

And you’re done! Spread on your cooled cake or swirl on top of cupcakes with a piping bag.
Enjoy.🤎
How do I store Chocolate Pudding Frosting?
This chocolate pudding frosting will need to be stored in the refrigerator.
Place the frosting in an airtight container and keep in the refrigerator for up to a week.
The same applies to a cake frosted with pudding frosting, unless the cake recipe specifies that it’s good in the fridge for less than a week; then go with that.
You can also freeze this frosting for up to 3 months (by itself or on a cake), though we would usually choose to make and eat it fresh if we can!

Notes
This frosting isn’t your typical buttercream consistency; it is light and fluffy, so if you’re wanting to use it as a layer between two round cakes or something similar, you might have a hard time. I’d recommend doing some experimenting first, to see if it’ll hold up well enough.
This recipe makes the perfect amount to frost one 9×13 inch cake.
More ways to customize your Pudding Frosting
I love chocolate, so the chocolate version is my favorite to put on cakes. (Hey, are you needing a new and different idea for a birthday cake? Here you go!) However, here are some other fun pudding frosting flavors to try, if you’d like!
- Vanilla. As you might have guessed, you can simply substitute vanilla instant pudding for the chocolate and make a vanilla version of pudding frosting.
- Mocha. Use vanilla instant pudding instead of chocolate and also add a teaspoon of instant coffee (or more, to taste!) to make a mocha pudding frosting.
- Mint. Use vanilla instant pudding instead of chocolate and add a couple drops of mint flavoring and a couple drops of green food coloring to make a mint colored and flavored pudding frosting.
- Choose you favorite flavor of instant pudding mix and use it instead of dry chocolate pudding mix to make any flavor of frosting! I did a quick search and found banana cream, pumpkin spice, white chocolate, French vanilla, and more specialty flavors. Wow!
