Strawberry Dessert is a delicious homemade strawberry dessert in and of itself; add it to waffles, ice cream, or brownies and top with whipped topping for a wonderful treat!

Five simple ingredients and a little bit of time is all it takes to whip up this sweet dessert.
This was a fairly common dessert on our family dinner table and one that everyone in the family enjoyed. Another favorite that’s similar to this one is Thickened Fruit Salad Dessert.
Growing up on the farm, my mom always had a large strawberry patch in the garden.
They were June-bearing strawberries, so every summer in June we would spend time in the strawberry patch, picking pails of juicy red berries.
MMM…fresh, homegrown strawberries can’t be beat!
Then we’d bring the strawberries in, cut the tops off, wash them and finally slice and bag them in freezer bags or boxes to be stored in the freezer. Strawberry jam was another thing Mom would make with fresh strawberries.
I’m sure we complained about weeding the patch and picking the berries, but it sure was nice to have the strawberries in the freezer for strawberry desserts just such as this one in the middle of winter.

Ingredients
Water – cold water or room temperature water from the tap is great. Don’t use warm or hot water; it won’t mix well with the perma-flo!
Sugar – regular granulated white sugar
Perma-flo – this can be a challenge to find at a regular grocery store; it’s common at bulk food stores. However, therm-flo makes a good substitute and you can purchase it here. What exactly is perma-flo? Check it out here.
Strawberry gelatin – a regular box of strawberry jello
Strawberries – sliced, fresh or frozen strawberries. We personally used frozen strawberries we harvested from the garden in strawberry season and froze for later use, which just so happens to be today; in this strawberry dessert!
Supplies we used
How to make our Homemade Strawberry Dessert Sauce Recipe From Scratch!

In a heavy saucepan, whisk everything together into one smooth liquid.

Next, place the saucepan containing the liquid onto a burner on the stove and turn the heat to medium-high.
Whisk mixture every now and then until it starts to cook; then whisk continuously.
Keep whisking, and the strawberry mixture will start to turn somewhat clear and thicken slightly.

Once the mixture has become slightly thick, remove from the stovetop and allow to cool for at least 15 minutes (or more!).
To reduce the chance of it getting a dried layer of “skin” over the top while it cools, you can press a piece of plastic wrap down right in on top of the strawberry dessert. (We added our frozen strawberries soon enough and kept stirring while it cooled, so we didn’t bother with this step!)
If using frozen strawberries, add them now. This helps cool down the strawberry dessert, and thaws the strawberries at the same time!

If you’re using fresh berries, now would be a great time to wash and slice them!
Then mix in the strawberries, if using fresh strawberries.

Transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate for an hour or more before serving.
Enjoy!

Notes
Don’t panic if the finished strawberry sauce still seems too runny – it will thicken as it cools!
Perma-flo can be found at most Mennonite or Amish bulk food stores; however, if you don’t have access to perma-flo, therm-flo makes a good substitute. Buy it here.
If you’d rather have a smooth strawberry dessert sauce, you can puree the strawberries in a blender before adding them to the strawberry sauce. Frozen strawberries may need to be thawed before pureeing, for best results.
This dessert is customizable! For example, you can use peach jello and add diced peaches or cherry jello and add pitted cherry halves.
Serving Ideas for Strawberry Dessert Sauce
One great thing about strawberry dessert, it’s very versatile. Here’s a few of our favorite ways to prepare, serve and eat it:
- By itself. Strawberry dessert is great all by itself. Sometimes we’ll add a layer of cool whip or marshmallows on top, just for fun.
- With waffles. Make your favorite waffle recipe (or use this one) and add a serving of strawberry dessert and a dollop of cool whip for a delicious breakfast!
- With ice cream. Strawberry dessert makes a wonderful topping for vanilla (or any flavor!) ice cream.
- With brownies. Create a decadent dessert by layering brownies and strawberry dessert and a swirl of cool whip (as seen in the picture below!). Or better yet: brownies, ice cream, strawberry dessert and cool whip.

- You can also use this recipe as a strawberry filling for fresh strawberry pie in strawberry season. Make your favorite pie crust, then use fresh strawberries in this recipe to create a delicious fresh strawberry pie from scratch!
- More ideas and ways to use this strawberry dessert include: smoothies, breakfast parfaits, milkshakes, topping for mini cheesecakes, etc. Go ahead and use your imagination!
