Homemade bone broth tastes so much better than store-bought! And it's very easy to make your own tasty homemade bone broth at home with this simple method. Just put everything in the crockpot and let it simmer!

A Super Easy Recipe for Homemade Bone Broth
Fun fact for today: I don't buy bone broth at the store! I (almost) never have, actually. It is so, so easy to make at home!
Quite a few of my soup recipes call for chicken broth, so broth is something I like to keep stocked in my freezer, especially during the cooler months of the year.
One great thing about making bone broth, I like how customizable it is. You can add all sorts of extras like celery, carrots, onions, garlic, and herbs or you can skip them all. I have already made bone broth with only bones and water - that's it!
Homemade bone broth is perfect for making soups and stews and using in other recipes, or you can even drink it straight, if that's your thing:)
Supplies You'll Need (and what we used)
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Cutting board and kitchen knife
- Slow cooker - this 7-quart Crockpot was a wedding gift and I use it alot! She may be plain Jane, but she works great:)
- Fine mesh strainer
- Large bowl - to strain the broth into
- Freezer boxes - these work great for broth storage! I like to wait until the broth cools to pour it in these

All About the Ingredients
- Bones - chicken, beef, ham or turkey bones. I usually use beef or chicken!
- Onion - any kind of onion. Mine is fresh from the garden:)
- Garlic - ok, I'm going to cheat today and use the bought minced garlic from Aldi 🫢
- Apple cider vinegar - this is supposed to help draw the minerals out of the bones
- Salt - I like to use Redmond real salt or Diamond Crystal kosher salt
- Water
And there are more things you can add! Herbs like thyme or a bay leaf and more veggies like carrots and celery tops. I actually discovered some celery in my fridge, so I added a few celery tops.

How to make Easy Homemade Bone Broth
If using raw bones, roast them first. Put them on a pan and bake at 400 for 30-45 minutes. This deepens the flavor! If using bones leftover from a roast, you can skip this step.
Chop the onion. This lovely cutting board is from Forest Decor! (and no, we're not affiliated with them)

Place the bones, onion, garlic, apple cider vinegar, salt, and celery in the crockpot. Then pour the water over top.

Put the lid on and turn the crockpot of high until it's gently boiling, then turn it down to low and let it simmer for 12-24 hours.

Strain the broth through a fine mesh strainer. Discard all the bones and veggies.

Use the broth right away or let it cool, then pour in freezer boxes and freeze for later.

Enjoy!
How to Store Homemade Bone Broth
Pour the broth into an airtight container. (I often use freezer boxes) Keep the bone broth in the refrigerator for several days or in the freezer for several months.
Tips, Tricks and Notes
- You can use chicken, beef, ham or turkey bones with this recipe!
- If making beef broth to make into bone broth hot chocolate, I would skip the savory ingredients (garlic, onion, etc.).
- The water evaporates a little while cooking, so even if you put 16 cups of water in, you won't quite get 16 cups of finished broth.
