Cheeseburger French Fry Casserole is ground beef and peas, drenched with cheese sauce then topped with French fries and baked in the oven. It’s a simple and delicious meal for the whole family!

The Classic Flavors of a Cheeseburger and Fries in One Simple Casserole
Looking for a quick and easy dinner idea to feed (and please) your entire family? This one’s a favorite of mine for those busy weeknights or whenever, really. You can hardly go wrong with a comfort meal like Tater Tot Casserole or this Cheeseburger French Fry Casserole.
It requires a little effort to make the cheese sauce from scratch, but it’s worth it! Oh, and there are no canned soups like cream of mushroom soup or cheddar cheese soup in this recipe, so that’s great.
Otherwise, frying the ground beef is very simple, and frozen French fries and peas are super handy. Of course, you can make your own French fries too! I’m sure they’d taste better. All in all, it doesn’t take that long to prep this meal (ahead of time if you wish!), clean up the kitchen and get some other stuff done before dinner.
So, if you love simple, one pan casserole dinners, this is the recipe for you! It’s the ultimate comfort food and a family favorite, too. Find more meal/food ideas right this way!➡️

Here’s the list of ingredients (+ substitutions!) for Cheeseburger French Fry Casserole:

- Ground beef – like usual, you can substitute with any ground meat, though ground beef is definitely our preference.
- Onion Powder – it’s easy, and no one will be complaining about the real onion pieces in the meat mixture when eating! (IYKYK😅)
- Salt (& pepper if you’d like!)
- Peas – frozen, from the store. Or if you’re a gardener, you might have your own preserved peas in the freezer. You can actually also add any additional frozen veggie you’d like! If it’s something a little more firm like carrots, I would cook them a little first before adding them to the casserole.
- French fries – frozen, from the store. Unless you feel like making your own from scratch, then go for it!
For the cheese sauce:
- Butter – preferably salted butter; if you use unsalted butter, I’d recommend giving the cheese sauce a taste and adding more salt, if necessary!
- Flour – regular all purpose flour works well. You can also use fresh milled whole wheat flour, though the texture of your cheese sauce may be a little more grainy.
- Salt (& pepper if you wish!)
- Cheese – you can use either processed cheese such as Velveeta or regular cheddar cheese from a block.

Supplies we used
- Large skillet – to fry the ground beef
- Saucepan – to make the cheese sauce
- 9×13 baking dish – or any casserole dish that’s similar in size should work as long as it has tall sides
- Measuring cups and spoons
- A spatula or two
- Whisk – it’s very handy to use a whisk for making the cheese sauce
How to make our Cheeseburger French Fry Casserole Recipe
Preheat the oven to 350° F.
First of all, make the cheese sauce. Melt the butter in a saucepan on the stove on medium heat, then whisk in the flour. Slowly add the milk whisking all the while. Stir frequently until the mixture has heated and thickened slightly (it’ll still be fairly runny), then add the cheese and salt. Turn the burner on low and stir occasionally until the cheese is all melted.
Whisk the melted butter and flour… Whisk in the milk and let it heat and thicken… Add the cheese blocks… …and stir until the cheese has melted into a lovely sauce!
Meanwhile, get the beef cooking. In a skillet, cook and brown the ground beef along with the salt and onion powder. After it’s cooked, drain the excess grease if you wish, then spread the cooked ground beef in a greased 9×13 pan.

Add a layer of frozen peas, then drizzle the cheese sauce over top. Lastly, add a layer of french fries on top of the casserole. Slide the casserole into the preheated oven and bake at 350° for 1 hour or until the casserole is bubbling around the edges and the french fries are golden brown.
Let the casserole rest for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!💛

Storing + Re-heating Leftover Cheeseburger French Fry Casserole
Place any leftover casserole in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. When you’re ready to re-heat, you can stick the casserole in the oven for about thirty minutes at 350 degrees, until it’s nice and hot. Or, you can stick it in the microwave and heat it that way.
Tips, Tricks + Notes
French fries often come in one pound bags so it’s handy to just open a bag and use them all; however, the fries are my favorite part, so I like to add extra – up to two pounds of fries!
Call me crazy, but I love to add a drizzle of ketchup over my serving of cheeseburger French fry casserole before I eat it! Hmm, is that a Mennonite thing?
If you don’t have frozen peas (or don’t care for peas) you can use green beans (or any veggie, really) instead! I would cook them a little before using in the casserole.
